INTRODUCTION TO JAZZ CHORDS AND COMPING
If you’ve been yearning to play the classic songs of Ellington, Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, and the other greats, then this class offers an opportunity to get yourself going. We’ll take a finite number of moveable chord positions and put them together in common chord progressions that you are likely to encounter, all while learning a wonderful repertoire of songs. We’ll discuss chord theory as we go through each step of the process so that you gain a better understanding of the guitar and music in general. Students should have a firm grasp of first position chords. Some familiarity with playing up the neck will be helpful, although not a prerequisite.

BRAZILIAN BAND Acoustic stringed instruments such as guitar, mandolin, bass, cavaquinho, even ukelele(!) as well as vocalists, light percussion, and accordion will have a great time learning to blend with each other, playing complementary parts that create an infectious groove. We will cover traditional and modern samba, bossa nova, baião, forro, and choro. Songs that we play will include sambasand bossas by Jobim, João Gilberto, Ivan Lins, and others; baiãos by Hermeto Pascoal and Luis Gonzaga; forros by Sivuca and others, and classic choros by Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim. Level guideline: Guitarists should have some prior experience with playing moveable chord forms. Mandolin players should already be able to play some tunes and be familiar with basic chords. Ukelele players should be well-versed in the basic uke chords. Bassists should have some prior experience in any style. For singers who would like to participate, all you need is an ability to sing on pitch and a willingness to learn songs in Portuguese!
