Ed Johnson and Novo Tempo
NOVO TEMPO – Brazilian jazz ensemble
Ed Johnson tours regularly with his band NOVO TEMPO, featuring brass man JOHN WORLEY, woodwind player KRISTEN STROM, guitar/mandolin wizard SCOTT SORKIN, Canadian pianist/singer JENNIFER SCOTT, Canadian bass star RENE WORST, drummer MARK IVESTER, and percussionist JEFF BUSCH.
Novo Tempo came together when Johnson released Over That Wave (2002), an album of original songs with a strong Brazilian and Latin undercurrent. Novo Tempo translates from Portuguese as “new times.” Ed had been performing a song with the same title by Brazilian songwriter Ivan Lins, and thought that name captured the sound of this new ensemble. The group recorded two more albums: Movimento (2004) and The Other Road (2007), both featuring Ed’s Brazilian-inspired compositions. The recordings have garnered international acclaim, and the group’s live performances routinely bring audiences to their feet in enthusiastic response.
Novo Tempo also appears as a quintet, quartet and trio, and Ed also performs solo.
